Sharpclaw raced out of the territory, his mind swimming with thoughts of his family. Once he was out of the clans territories, he started padding slowly.
Firewhisker kept stumbling, padding into the forest. She was exhausted, and then fell to the ground. "Sharpclaw!" she wailed.
Sharpclaw heard a faint wail behind him in the distance. He turned around, and began walking towards the wailing. He almost stumbled over Firewhisker on the ground. "Firewhisker!" he gasped. Firewhisker blinked. "Precious, what are you doing out here?" Sharpclaw whispered. "I-I need you. I can't live without you." Firewhisker whimpered. "We need to find a place so you can rest." Sharpclaw mewed, helping her to her paws. His eyes widened when he saw the kits, but he picked them up and set them on his back, then began padding into the distance once again. By sunhigh, Sharpclaw had found a large, secludded cave. He helped his mate down into a nest, and placed his daughters next to her, and they began suckling. "Firewhisker, I love the fact that you came here, but it is way too dangerous out here. Espically for our kits." Sharpclaw began. "You don't want me here?!" Firewhisker cried. "Precious, I do want you and our kits here. But, I'm saying it will be very dangerous." Sharpclaw mewed, stroking her cheek. Firewhisker sighed. "Firewhisker, you and the kits would have been safer at the camp. On the way out here, I was attacked twice by the enemy clans. Not seriously, but I was. You know, I live much better knowing you were always safe. I was attacked before even making it out here, but this is where all the exiled cats come, and they can be ruthless, rude, vicious cats. It kills me to say this, but you and the kits should head back to camp, stay safe, live longer." Sharpclaw mewed gently, his eyes burning with sorrow. Firewhisker burst into tears. Sharpclaw wiped the tears away. "Sweetie, please don't cry. You don't know hard it would be for me to go hunting while leaving you, still injured, alone with 4 kits. You are certainly strong enough to protect them, but not when you are injured. But, I'm going to leave it up to you. I'm torn to pieces trying to decide. I know that Swirlstar exiled me, but she didn't exile you. I'd love for you to stay, but I'm not going to make you." he mewed gently. Firewhisker pressed into his fur. "I'm not leaving you. I need you. That's why I came out here. I need to be with you. I need your comforting words. If I stayed any longer, I may have killed Swirlstar. You-you didn't deserve it. Our kits need to see their father in real life, not in dreams or imaginations." she whimpered. Sharpclaw smiled and purred loudly. "I'm glad you decided to stay precious. I missed you so much." he purred, curling around her. He smothered her ears with loving licks. Moments later, they all fell asleep.
The next morning, Sharpclaw rose silently. He stretched, planning to go hunting to feed his family. He remembered sorrowfully the last time he did that. He nudged Firewhisker gently. Firewhisker blinked her eyes slowly. "I'm going hunting. I want to you be careful, and keep watch for any trouble. I'll be back soon." Sharpclaw mewed quietly. Firewhisker smiled, and licked his ears, before he padded away.
Sharpclaw hunted quickly, so he could return to his family. He hastily caught 2 rabbits and a squirrel, before returning to the cave. He dropped the food in front of his mate, then settled down next to her. Firewhisker picked a smaller rabbit, and began chowing down, when she saw Fizzlekit's eyes twitch, then flicker open slowly. Sharpclaw smiled when he saw his daughter open her eyes, followed by Popkit, Luckkit, and Silentkit. The little blue and green gazes traveled around the cave, finally landing on Firewhisker and Sharpclaw. "Oh, my gorgeous daughters, I'm your mommy." Firewhisker mewed softly. Sharpclaw smiled with joy. "I'm your daddy." he purred. Luckkit blinked, and let out a tiny mewl. "Hi Luckkit!" Firewhisker and Sharpclaw purred at the same time. Firewhisker and Sharpclaw watched happily as their kits began viewing the world.
2 days later...
Firewhisker was sleeping calmly, until her dream turned horrible. Her kits were grown up, and some large dog grabbed Silentkit, and began ripping her to shreds. Firewhisker wailed with horror, tossing and turning in her sleep. Sharpclaw woke up to see Firewhisker tossing, whimpering, and wailing in her sleep. He stood up and nudged her gently. "Firewhisker!" he mewed gently in her ear. "Wake up!" he added. Firewhisker's eyes flew up, her eyes filled with horror. Sharpclaw stroked her cheek softly. "Precious, you had a nightmare." he whispered softly. Firewhisker started crying. "Silentkit! She-she's ok right?" she cried. Sharpclaw nodded. "She's just perfect." he purred gently. He crouched down next to her and licked her ears. "Would you like to talk about it?" he mewed gently. Firewhisker gazed into his eyes. "The kits-kits were all grown up. A large dog began ripping Silentkit to shreds, and I couldn't stop him!" she whimpered. She shoved her face into Sharpclaw's fur, crying. Sharpclaw purred softly in her ears. "Everything's going to be just fine. There are no dogs here." he purred. Silentkit's head rose slowly. "Mom-ma? Dad-da?" she mewled shakingly. "Silentkit!" mewed Firewhisker, gasping. Silentkit rose to her paws and wobbily crashed into her mom's fur. Firewhisker smothered her daughter with loving pride filled licks. Sharpclaw purred happily. Luckkit rose to her paws, almost falling over. "Dadda!" she mewled, stepping forward into her dad's fur. Sharpclaw wrapped his tail around her softly. Fizzlekit rose wobbily. "Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!" she mewed, crashing into her mom's fur. Popkit rose, fell over, rose again, and stepped forward. "Mom-ma! Dad-da!" she mewled, crashing into her dad's soft fur. "You girls are wonderful!" Sharpclaw mewed. "Dadda? Where are we?" Luckkit mewled. "We're at home. We are going to live here forever." he mewed, licking her ears. Luckkit smiled.
"I like it here Momma!" she mewled. Firewhisker smiled. "I'm so glad you do." she purred.
